River Herring

The River Herring Network is a professional society for river herring wardens & volunteers, and a clearinghouse of information for river herring enthusiasts.

It began in 2011 with a grant from the Mass Bays Program.  It is now directed by a 12 member steering committee with support from the Barnstable County Cape Cod Cooperative Extension Marine Program, Woods Hole Sea Grant, the Division of Marine Fisheries, Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance, and the Cape Cod Conservation District.

The mission of the River Herring Network is to:

  • Facilitate communication among herring wardens in MA
  • Support herring wardens in their role as active participants in local, state, and federal fisheries management processes
  • Gather and disseminate relevant information for wardens and volunteers
  • Document and communicate local management practices, and the natural and cultural history of herring runs
