Mission
The Nutrition Education Program (NEP) provides individuals, families and communities with the knowledge and skills that empower them to make informed choices about healthy diets, efficiently manage food resources, and reduce the risks of chronic diseases and foodborne illness. The education provided draws upon nutrition recommendations presented in the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the USDA's MyPyramid. Extension educators target consumers and families, municipal employees, food handlers, low-income and high-risk individuals, the elderly and agencies that serve these populations.

The steps you take (small, medium, or giant) can go a long way toward changing the scene at schools and improving the health and education of the children of Barnstable County.

Eating Essentials

This program conducted by Cape Cod Cooperative Extension's Nutrition Educator, Susan Bourque, RD, LDN, will cover the basics of nutrition and healthy eating using the U.S. Dietary Guidelines. Topics covered include an introduction to MyPyramid, Fats: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, and Reading the Food Label Using the 5/20 Rule. Also included will be a chance to put it into practice with a label reading activity. Time will be set aside for questions and answers with a sampling of a quick and easy brown bag lunch recipe where delicious and nutritious come together!

Nutrition in the Classroom

This presentation begins with a brief overview of the childhood obesity problem as an introduction to your school wellness policy. The remainder of this workshop highlights activities for integrating nutrition education and physical activity into the curriculum. Teachers will experience two hands-on activities that they can recreate in their own classroom.
