Mission
The Nutrition Education Program (NEP) provides individuals, families and communities with the knowledge and skills that empower them to make informed choices about healthy diets, efficiently manage food resources, and reduce the risks of chronic diseases and foodborne illness. The education provided draws upon nutrition recommendations presented in the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the USDA's MyPyramid. Extension educators target consumers and families, municipal employees, food handlers, low-income and high-risk individuals, the elderly and agencies that serve these populations.

Adult Projects

Food Pantry Project

Cooking demonstrations and nutrition displays are provided regionally to several food pantries to encourage low income individuals and families to utilize food provided to prepare healthy meals with nutritious cooking methods. Opportunity for tasting and taking home recipes is part of each visit. Workshops are also provided on location if feasible. Workshops have included topics such as: Meal Planning with Diabetes, Cooking for One or Two, Feeding your Family Without Starving Your Budget, Eating Gluten-Free and Emergency Meal Preparation.

Food Handling is a Risky Business and Food Safety for Volunteers also can be offered to staff, volunteers and participants of the food pantries.

Nutrition Notes To Go are newletters with seasonal nutrition topics and healthy recipes distributed with the Food Pantry Project.
