December 12, 2011 Winter Moth Survey. A number of people on the Cape are reporting that they have been seeing huge clouds of moths recently. These are male winter moths. They have been a serious pest on a number of plants ranging from oak to blueberry over the last 10 years. The size of the current flight is a strong indicator of size of next year's problem when the eggs hatch sometime next April. More information to follow. The survey on the link above is intended to help the researchers at UMass - Amherst get a better understanding of the population within the state. They have succeeded in introducing a parasitic fly that has been demonstrated to be highly effective in areas like Nova Scotia, the original point of winter moth introduction from Europe. http://massnrc.org/pests/blog/2011/11/2011-massachusetts-winter-moth-survey.html
