Mission
To establish, develop and carry out education programs in marine resource development, to assist with problems concerning coastal industries and the management of coastal resources, and to transfer technological innovations, educational and informational materials to public officials, educators, and marine users groups.

4-H Coastal Explorer

This "4-H Coastal Explorer" is a unique educational vehicle available to area schools, organizations, town beaches and libraries throughout Cape Cod! The vehicle is a versatile 31-foot custom-built motor coach complete with state-of-the-art equipment and displays, providing students and visitors with an opportunity to learn about Cape Cod's coastal environment. On board you will find:
  • saltwater aquariums with live animals
  • computer and interactive games
  • TV/VCR for viewing marine life videos
  • microscopes to view marine life
  • blue shark and dolphin models displaying both external and internal anatomy
  • hands-on exhibits

The school marine science program for grades K-7 emphasizes hands-on learning, with classes following the MA Curriculum Frameworks for teaching Science and Technology. A curriculum is provided to each participating school containing pre and post-activity suggestions. Grade specific programs include "Sea Creature Feature," "Animal Classification," "Ocean Habitats," "Web of Life," "Fishy Fauna," Sea Turtle Life Cycles," and "A Look into Sharks."

During the fall and spring of the school year, the "Coastal Explorer" will visit Barnstable County schools, with stays lasting from a few days to two weeks. The vehicle is handicapped-accessible. Requirements for "Coastal Explorer" include a level area for setup and 24-hour access to electricity (minimum of 20 amps, 110 volts). The "Coastal Explorer" can plug into a standard outlet, but does require at least a 30-amp outlet for the air conditioning system, if needed. The vehicle is outfitted with a security system.

The summer features a more informal program for people of lall ages when the "Coastal Explorer" visits libraries, youth camps, beaches, museums and parks within Barnstable County. User fee for any programs listed above is $100 per weekday, or $500/week. For further information about "Coastal Explorer" please call Eileen Sonnenberg at (508) 375-6694.
