Alert Message:
The Massachusetts Public Health Council (PHC) has approved extending the ban on disposal of sharps in household waste to July 1, 2012 in accordance with provisions outlined in 105 CMR 480.000 Minimum Requirements for the Management of Medical or Biological Waste (State Sanitary Code, Chapter VIII). Currently, statewide access to sharps collection centers are still in the implementation stages. Despite the progress made, there are still many communities in the state where safe, affordable needle collection options are not yet available.  The Department believes that extending the deadline for two years will allow sufficient time to ensure that a statewide program for sharps collection is in place before the household disposal ban take effect.
