HHW info for Homeowners

Household Hazardous Waste collections held on Cape Cod are a collaboration between Barnstable County and Cape Cod municipalities. Collections occur at a considerable expense to towns, making it important for all waste to be audited before coming to the collection. 

The number and frequency of collections vary by town. Click here for the 2010 HHW Schedule. Collections are held on scheduled Saturdays from 9:00 am to noon or 1:00 pm and typically occur between April and October. 

Upon entering the collection site, you will be greeted, given educational materials, and asked if you have mercury to recycle (free themostat and thermometer exchange program available). A HHW staff member will conduct a six question anonymous survey (used for administrative purposes) while another staff member sorts your waste. After being surveyed and sorted, you will be directed to the unloading station where your waste is then collected by the contracted hazardous waste hauler. Residents are asked to stay in their vehicles throughout the entire process.

It is common for residents to bring non-hazardous wastes, such as latex paint, to the collections.These non-hazardous items are not accepted at the collections; please conduct a HHW audit before you attend.
