Bournedale Elementary and Bourne Middle School:  Alternative Energy Program

The Town of Bourne Selectmen's Energy Advisory Committee recently received funding from the MTC (Massachusetts Technology Collaborative) for energy & conservation education programming and to sponsor an ENERGY FAIR for the public.

A super enthusiastic group of students from Bourndale Elementary have been experimenting with alternative energy including:  solar, wind and more.  So far they have built their own solar fans, made parachutes, origami windmills & took turns flying a 'solar balloon'.  Future adventures include solar cars, thermal energy and composting.

Also planned is a SOLAR BIRTHDAY PARTY in honor of the Solar Panel Project currently being installed at the Bourne Middle School.  Students are planning lots of hands-on fun and energy related activities for all ages.   Be on the lookout for more information about this FUN event so you can mark your calendars!!

21st Century Photo Club 2010

Anyone who knows me can tell you that I was bitten by the shutterbug back in the 80's when I owned my first 35mm camera, and then again in 2003 when I bought my first digital one. I was hooked by the instant nature of success, and how I could edit and print my own photos and share them with others almost immediately.

I have put together a community slideshow for the Children, Youth and Families Summit for the last three years (hosted by BCCCYF), and in January of this year, started a photography Club at the 21st Century Learning Grant "Zoom" program with 8th graders, as Barnstable High School. I enlisted the support of my long-time friend, retired videographer Heather MacKenzie, and we were off! We meet every Tuesday at the high school, and have taught the students how to point and shoot, edit, create slideshows, and more. On a recent trip to the Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable, we learned the three basic rules of Photography from a local expert, John Tunney:

  1. Keep it Simple
  2. Rules of Thirds
  3. Work the Scene

And then we went off on a Photography Scavenger Hunt to take photos of a triangle, something made of wood, part of a door, a smile, a tree, anything moving, something yellow, a flower, clutter, and an expression.

Check out the photos in the slideshow below, all taken by members of the Zoom Photo Club, and see if you can guess what category each falls under!
